Hairstyles of the Victorian Era

Hairstyles in the Victorian Era were as varied as the clothes themselves, however for the most part hair was
worn up.
Some evening styles, consisted of curls down in back or on the shoulders. For a short time in the 1870's some rather
elaborate hairstyles, look as if the hair is unconfined, however most of these styles required extra hair pieces
to accomplish. As a general rule, a female who wore her hair down was not considered a "Lady"- this was
not a show of sophistication- rather a show of immaturity, only young girls wore their hair down.
Many of the wild west performers wore their hair down for shows (Annie Oakley included)
but would not have appeared in public this way otherwise.
Be wary of using the photo of the professional beauty, actress or performer as documentation for wearing your hair
down-
these were performers and as such might follow a whole different set of rules than the average woman would have
followed.
I have attempted to choose photos to show a range of styles in this era and arranged them according to date.
