I Can't Find
What I need!

Costume Help
The costume help listed in here is meant to have a historical "feel" and be as accurate as possible while remaining on a budget.
I will try to explain the main parts of the costume and list what they were made of and what an inexpensive substitute would be.
Be aware this is not used for true historical reenactment,
but instead suggestions to help kids "get into" history.
If you want true historical patterns please check out the links section.

Where do I get my stuff at?
There are plenty of places to start looking depending on whether you want to "modify" or start from scratch.
Good Places to start looking are:
Grandma/Grandpa's closet/attic (better ask first!)
The Salvation Army
Flea Markets
Garage Sales
Thrift stores
Army surplus
Fabric/craft stores

So what am I looking for?
The overall "look" you are trying to achieve will dictate what you need. Old west gentlemen can make good use of a man's old dress suit in a neutral color, especially if its wool! Martha Washington might take two old formals and put them together to create a dress. For these projects we are not going to worry about anachronisms (things that are "out of their period, like zippers, etc.) we are just going to try to achieve a general look. My best suggestion is to take a picture of your person and go and try stuff on!

Army/Military Surplus
(you can get some great basic coats here pretty cheap
check out your local listings or try these online)

Sportsman's Guide(try searching for men's wool coats and pants)

Fabric/Craft stores include
(most of the below links have store locators
make sure to check out the sale racks at your local stores!!)

Wal-mart
Hancocks
Hobby Lobby(straw hats, fabric, beads, feathers
Jo-Ann's
(fabric, flowers
