Costume Help- 1880's
Below are some photographs of average people in the 1880's.
These outfits would be worn to town, to church, meetings, or everyday for light chores such as sewing and light
housekeeping. This is the era of the bustle, skirts are fuller in the back and gored in the front, ladies bodices
are generally fairly form fitting.
A wrapper(a simple one piece dress) would be worn for maternity wear or heavier housekeeping chores for the ladies
over this they would wear an apron. Gentlemen would wear a simple shirt, wool or heavy cotton pants (blue jeans
are not appropriate substitutions) with suspenders, and perhaps a vest and sack coat depending on how cold the
weather was.
