Gay 90's Dresses-1890-1900
This period would see the end of the bustle- skirts would be shaped to look like upside down cones and trumpets- skirts were circular (1/2-3/4 circle), or gored (usually in odd numbers-5, 7, 9...) The working girl was appearing in more numbers and waist and skirt combinations were in demand for ease of cleaning. Dresses were more tailored, but the sleeves were growing- between the years of 1893-1897 the revival of the leg-o-mutton sleeve would be at its peak, a relapse of fashion in memory of Queen Victoria's youth. The Gibson girl would make her appearance and reign supreme through the Edwardian era.

A Visiting Dress 1896

My Sister in a Dress I made for her fashioned after an 1896 Harper's Bazar Fashion Plate. All the old gentlemen rave when they see her strolling down the promandade. It is fashioned from Shot Taffeta (Blue and Teal) and Black Brocade with real mother of pearl buttons. The vest and Jacket are made as one piece, the waist(blouse) is seperate. The hem of the dress is faced with drill to help it stand out in the cone shape popular of the period, and the sleeves are set in with flat box pleats to make them stand correctly

Circa 1895

A dress fashioned after a fashion plate from about 1895- this particular dress was shipped to Sweden. The bodice on this dress itself is fairly plain, but interest is added by a wide white lace collar that closes on one shoulder and a black lace "ruff" covering the high neckline of the dress. The skirt on this dress was set in tucks at the waistline to the hip about 3/8" apart in groups of 3, making an otherwise simple skirt very elegant.

A Walking Dress 1895's

A Walking dress- this dress was made as a maternity dress. but also to be usable after the pregancy. I created a loose fitting shirtwaist from a black and red brocade and paired it with an "Eton style" jacket with wide lapels and large leg-o-mutton sleeves. The skirt was a very plain 5 gore skirt with one special feature- the back two gores of the skirt were finished at the waistband with a casing and drawstrings- allowing adjustment of the waistband.
