Parasols for Cold Mountain
When I was contacted to make some parasols for the filming of the Movie Cold Mountain, we had
to do in depth research in a hurry. We were told they needed to be mostly neutral colors and they would be used
in the Charleston scene.
I researched ebay and antique sellers and my own collection to glean various ideas for the period, and set about
trying to replicate them in less than a month.
The dupioni was seen on original 1860's parasol, and the copper colored parasol is the exact shade of one in my
own collection.
In all a total of 8 parasols were constructed, unfortunately they are nearly all fairly far in the background!
We
also made parasols for Legends of Zorro!

The line-up

China silk with scalloped edge- hedge handle

Pearl dupioni lined with palest peach china silk, double scalloped panels, silk tassel
hedge handle

Mocha china silk scalloped edge with scalloped ruffle
hedge handle stained rosewood colored

Silk twill in tan- simple handle with ball end

Tussah Silk with chantilly lace overlay- ivory T- handle
This one is seen to the right in the same scene the green one and later in the background

The copper parasol below and the pearl dupioni parasol are also in this scene

Copper china silk, tripple ruffle- black handle with matching silk tassel

Pagoda shape in brown china silk lined with ivory and trimmed with fringe-
folding carriage handle with ivory tip and mother of pearl dot inlay

Green/dark red shot doupioni with black silk fringe
Black enameled T-Handle
This one shows up best in the movie right at the beginning of scene 9 - Back to Cold Mountain

The tan silk twill is at left toward the bottom
I'm also going to be teaching a class on how to make great parasols like these-
look below for the link to more information.
