Bustle Era Dresses 1881-1889

A Day Dress circa 1885

A lightweight dress for summer dating to the early to mid 1880's depending on the bustle that would be chosen to wear with it. Applied lapels and bows down the front of the pointed apron skirt give this dress length, and the ruffle beneath the stand-up collar and cuffs add interest to the design.

Day Dress 1881

Simple and summery, a dress reminicent of the early 1880's before the wire bustle had made a reappearance. Dresses were cut allowing for the bustle at this time, but not often worn with them in America. This dress is a cotton gauze polonaise with a twill cotton underskirt, perfect for for an afternoon game of croquet. Its only trimming is the bias bands set on on the bottom of the polonaise skirts and the wide satin bows where the dress is "caught up" in the back.

School Girl's Dress
1880's

This was a design for my youngest sister, she wanted an "Adult dress" and was of the age to not be dressing like a little girl anymore. She had fallen in love with this plaid, so we set about making something appropriate from it, It has black velveteen cuffs and a false lapels, with a contrasting front panel applied over the front. It buttons up the back, as did most "school girls" dresses and is finished there by self fabric loops lined with the red fabric. The hemline features a bias ruffle headed with the red fabric and set on in box pleats which were then pressed down to allow the contrasting fabric to show.
